Caregiver Code of Conduct
The following statements may seem like common sense to you. However, when you put them all together, they create a nurturing environment for the residents and staff. We expect you to conduct yourself in the following manner while on the job.
Excellence:
I will thoroughly know and apply the standards of practice that apply to my area of responsibility.
I will always present myself as a professional in what I say and do.
I will maintain a cheerful and positive attitude while at work.
I will constantly strive to better understand the needs and desires of the residents.
I will take advantage of all appropriate in-house training sessions to prepare me to give exceptional customer service.
I will support and assist with resident activities to the extent that I am able.
I will always be conscious of safety by:
Taking immediate action when I see something unsafe.
Getting help when lifting residents or heavy objects.
Thoroughly knowing emergency procedures; and
Using safety equipment as necessary.
Independence:
I will encourage and take the time to let residents do things for themselves for them to maintain their independence and self-esteem.
I will encourage residents to participate in therapeutic, social and recreational activities.
I will balance the varied, and sometimes conflicting, personal preferences and needs of the residents.
I will assist the residents to be as independent as possible in all their daily living activities.
Individuality:
I will treat each resident as my "highest priority” when I am with them.
I will become familiar with and honor each resident's personal likes and dislikes.
I will respond as quickly as I can to the needs and requests of residents.
I will regularly call residents by "Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Miss,” unless they prefer to be called by their first name.
I will treat each resident as individuals and offer them choices whenever possible.
Dignity:
I will treat each resident with respect and dignity as I would someone who is close to me.
I will respect each resident's right to privacy.
I will talk about residents in a positive manner.
I will only discuss the residents’ condition with immediate family members or those directly involved in their care plan, and as directed by Organization policy and HIPAA law.
I will help the residents protect and secure their personal possessions.
I will knock or by some other means communicate my desire to enter a resident's room prior to entering.
I will treat family members and other visitors as guests.
Sense of Belonging Residents:
I will help the residents cope with the many changes that have taken place in their lives as they move into our community.
I will be patient and calm in difficult situations with residents.
I will smile, laugh and use my sense of humor with residents.
I will help residents feel at home by maintaining an attractive, homelike environment that is clean, odor free and well kept.
I will help the residents maintain a clean and comfortable wardrobe.
I will be kind and respectful to residents in what I say and do.
I will wear my name badge at all times so that residents, families and staff know who I am, and who to ask for help.
Family Members:
I will always take family members' concerns seriously and will personally follow up as quickly as possible.
I will help teach family members how to assist and support the residents, if requested.
I will respond quickly to family members' needs and requests.
I will be patient and calm in difficult situations with family members.
Colleagues:
I will, as an organization team member, either be personally involved in assisting residents daily or provide support services to those who do.
I will remember that my performance affects the success of all other members of the team.
I will pitch in and help other team members.
I will encourage and promote team members, even if it's not part of my normal work.
I will continually work to improve all that we do.
